Brooke Astor's Son To Remain Free During Appeal

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - The 88-year-old heir to an American fortune remains free on bail in New York while he pursues a further appeal of his conviction on charges of plundering his mother's millions.

Anthony Marshall is the son of Brooke Astor. He was convicted in 2009 of exploiting his mother's dementia to help himself to her fortune.

He appeared in court Friday in a wheelchair, accompanied by his family. Marshall asked that he be allowed to remain out of jail as he continues his efforts to overturn the 2009 conviction.

His initial appeal was denied in March.

Brooke Astor died in 2007 at the age of 105. Astor was the grand dame of the city's social elite. She gave away huge amounts of money she inherited from her third husband, Vincent Astor.
