Riverhead Police Seek Man Who Jumped Nursery School Fence, Grabbed Girl

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Police on Long Island are searching for a man they say jumped a fence at a nursery school and grabbed a child.

Teacher Barbara Schandel of the Pine Tree Day Nursery in Riverhead told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that it happened in the blink of an eye and she ran to intervene.

She said a man jumped over the fence at the school as children were playing.

"Once he was on our playground, he went towards three children that were there. There was like a Little Tike car and then he threw the Tike car. Then he grabbed one of the little children's arms," she said.

That's when Schandel said she slapped the man.

"After I slapped him on his arm and I was screaming in his face and he was just staring and we were eye to eye, that's when I got really nervous and I said, you know what, I'm just... scooping these kids up and running," she said.

Schandel said the man jumped back over the fence and police are still searching for him.
