NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A park has been renamed after Adam Yauch, best known as “MCA” of rap pioneers Beastie Boys, on the Brooklyn street where he grew up.

Yauch died on May 4, 2012 following a long battle with cancer. He was 47.

Palmetto Playground on State Street in Brooklyn Heights is where Yauch learned to ride a bike, hung out with friends and helped launch the Beastie Boys.

“This is our neighborhood,” mother Francis Yauch said. “Adam was 3 years old when we moved into State Street down the block and his whole life was Brooklyn. He loved Brooklyn.”

The playground was renamed Adam Yauch Park during a dedication ceremony Friday which was attended by Yauch’s parents, fellow Beastie Boy Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

“I’d like to thank the New York Park Department and the people of Brooklyn for honoring my friend and brother and recognizing how cool it is to have an Adam Yauch Park for other crazy New York kids,” said Horovitz.
