NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire at a memorial service in Newark, injuring five people including a 10-year-old girl.
It happened on 16th Street and Avon Avenue Thursday night.
A group of people were gathering for a vigil at an apartment to mourn the death of a man who was killed in a car accident when police said an argument broke out.
Then around 10 p.m., police said a man drove up in a dark-colored vehicle, got out, opened fire and drove off.
A neighbor heard at least 10 gun shots, 1010 WINS’ John Montone reported.
Five people were shot, including the 10-year-old girl who was hit in the ankle.
“She was just sitting there she said her leg was numb,” witness Coley Coleman said.
“All I could hear was the screaming,” witness Tallyn Summer told CBS 2’s Kathryn Brown. “I heard somebody say, ‘my baby, my baby.'”
Two women and two men were also shot in the arms and legs.
All were rushed to area hospitals and are expected to recover.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering information from witnesses.
Investigators have not identified a motive, target or suspect(s) in the incident and urge anyone with information to contact police at 973 733-3981 or 877 NWK-TIPS.
