Suspect Charged With Robbing Man, 78, Of Chain And Pendant In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A suspect has been charged with robbing a 78-year-old man of his chain and pendant in the Bronx, just after he bought flowers to place next to his deceased mother’s photo for Mother’s Day.
The shooting happened at 12:35 p.m. Friday. The man had just bought the flowers and was in front of 900 E. Tremont Ave. in the West Farms section of the Bronx when two suspects came up from behind and tried to snatch his chain.
The victim tried to fight the suspects off, but the suspects overpowered him and ran off with the chain and pendant, police said.
Police have released a surveillance video showing the robbery in progress. Two people pushing strollers first appear in the frame, quickly backing up as the attackers grab the man.
The man appears to swing the flowers he was carrying wrapped in paper defensively, but ends up on the ground as the suspects steal the pendant and chain.
Officers from the Narcotics Division were on the scene for an unrelated operation, and watched the robbery happen. They chased the suspects and captured one of them, police said.
The suspect who was caught – Charles Hackett, 23, of the Bronx – has been charged with robbery, resisting arrest, and criminal possession of marijuana. The other suspect fled in a silver vehicle.
Anyone with information about the suspect still at large was asked to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers Web site, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
Police have released a photo of the stolen chain and pendant.
