NY Waterway, NJ TRANSIT To Launch Bus-Ferry Pilot Program
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – If you ride three bus routes on NJ TRANSIT to get home from Manhattan during the week, you might be able to cut your commuting time.
A new bus-ferry pilot program will launch on Monday, June 3 on the NY Waterway ferry.
Commuters with a ticket or pass for NJT’s 158, 156R, or 159R bus routes will be able to, at no extra charge, bypass the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Lincoln Tunnel by going home via ferry boat.
It might not help everyone, but it’s pretty simple.
What you would do is flag down one of the NY Waterway buses in Midtown and downtown Manhattan, which you would locate using the free NY Waterway smartphone app’s bus locator.
Then you would take the bus to the West 39th Street Ferry Terminal. From there, it’s an 8-minute boat trip to the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal in Weehawken.
Once you get to Weehawken, you would board another NY Waterway bus that would continue along the River Road and Palisade Avenue corridor, duplicating the NJT route.
“We think we’ve got a better mouse trap. For people, especially at night, traveling from Manhattan to bypass the very crowded and very cluttered uncertainty of travel through the Port Authority Bus Terminal,” NY Waterway President Arthur Imperatore. “We think it’ll save them a half an hour a day or more.”
“This is about ‘thinking outside the box’ in our agency’s continued efforts to enhance the customer experience,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein. “By partnering with NY Waterway in this pilot effort, we are utilizing existing Trans-Hudson ferry capacity to keep our customers on the move.”
After the June trial, NY Waterway and NJ TRANSIT will offer special introductory priced New Joint Bus-Ferry 10-Trip Tickets for the bus-ferry option in July and August. These tickets will be available at Port Authority Bus Terminal ticket counters and ticket machines.
The special July-August Bus-Ferry fares will be $98 for 10-trip tickets to/from Midtown (Zone 2) or $122 for 10-trip tickets to/from Midtown (Zone 3).
