NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The Nets appear to be narrowing down their list of candidates for their vacant head-coaching position.
Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw has emerged as a serious target of general manager Billy King and owner Mikhail Prokhorov, sources told ESPN.
Shaw’s season ended on Monday night when the Pacers fell to the Heat, 99-76, in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals.
Brooklyn is expected to request permission to interview Shaw, the network reported.
The 47-year-old Shaw played professionally from 1988 until 2003. He was an assistant coach with the Lakers from 2004-2011 and has served as the Pacers’ associate head coach since being hired on June 23, 2011.
The Pacers pulled off an upset in the Eastern Conference semifinals by shocking the favored Knicks in six games.
The Nets have also asked permission to interview Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, sources told ESPN. Hollins, whose team was swept by the Spurs in the Western Conference finals, has been granted permission to meet with other organizations.
Hollins has been Memphis’ head coach since 2009, and he led the Grizzles to an impressive 56-26 record this season. He was previously an assistant coach with Arizona State University, the Phoenix Suns and the Milwaukee Bucks. He was the head coach of the Grizzles in Vancouver from 1999-2000 and then returned to the franchise for a second stint as the head coach in Memphis in 2004.
The 59-year-old also served as the head coach of the Las Vegas Silver Bandits of the International Basketball League from 2000-2001 and the Saint Louis Skyhawks of the United States Basketball League in 2002.
It was also reported this weekend that the Nets have contacted former Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy.
The Nets did not retain interim coach P.J. Carlesimo after the team lost to the Bulls in seven games in the first round of the 2013 NBA Playoffs.
