Private Plane Company Sees Spike In Business For Summer Getaways

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Renting a private plane for a weekend away is no longer just for movie stars and other high rollers.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, private charter planes have become a popular travel option for groups.

Talon Air owner Adam Katz said his business is up 40 percent in the past year.

"For instance LaGuardia to Nantucket, you could put nine people in an airplane and fly LaGuardia to Nantucket for the same price you'd pay JetBlue or another carrier. Providence, Rhode Island, anywhere on the Cape, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard or even Florida - once you start loading an airplane in a dense configuration, a private airplane filling all the seats, so the cost comes down dramatically and comes down to as low as commercial flying," Katz told Hall.

Katz said the increased use of private jets indicates to him that the economy is rebounding dramatically.

"Six or eight people or 10 people and they have a group of that many people, it brings the cost down dramatically and changes the equation. It changes private flying to value flying. Value flying with extreme comfort and convenience, so a lot of people do it because it allows them to go and come when they want, travel with people they know at a cost that's very affordable, akin to commercial flying," he told Hall.
