Fashion Designer Sylvie Cachay’s E-Mails Disclosed In Murder Trial
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – More details emerged in court Tuesday surrounding the death of fashion designer Sylvie Cachay.
As WCBS 880’s Irene Cornell reported, jurors won’t have to guess about what was going on in Cachay’s relationship with accused killer Nicholas Brooks.
She documented the ups and downs of her turbulent love life in e-mails to three best friends, describing Brooks as “the kid I’m dating,” as her man-boy, or as a stoner who quit his job in a cupcake shop and had no desire to work anywhere.
She complained that his drinking, drugging and late night partying was bringing her down, according to the e-mails disclosed in court Tuesday.
One of Cachay’s friends testified a similar account on Monday, telling the jury that Cachay, 33, told her that she was incompatible with Brooks in every way.
Lisa McHale also testified that Cachay confided in her about Brooks’ slacker ways.
Cachay had been determined to revive her swimsuit line after the financial crisis shut it down.
In early December 2010, the week before Cachay’s death, Brooks, now 26, showed her a website that he was using to hire prostitutes, according to the e-mails. That was the final straw and Cachay was determined to break up, the e-mail detailed.
A week later, she was dead. Her clothed body was found partially submerged in an overflowing bathtub in the Soho House Hotel.
Defense attorney Jeffrey Hoffman had previously admitted that the couple did have a rocky relationship, but claims that Cachay may have been heavily medicated and slipped in the tub. He also added that Brooks’ DNA was never found near the bathtub faucets.
The Medical Examiner determined she died from strangulation and drowning.
The trial is expected to last through the beginning of next month.
