David Wright, Robinson Cano Named Captains For Home Run Derby

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- David Wright and Robinson Cano are going to give the Home Run Derby a New York feel.

Wright, the third baseman for the New York Mets, this year's host for the All-Star game, has been named captain of the National League team. Cano, the crosstown rival Yankees second baseman, is going to lead the AL squad for the second straight year.

The derby is scheduled for July 15 at Citi Field as part of All-Star weekend festivities in New York City.

"This is a once-in-a-career type opportunity to be able to captain the Home Run Derby team at home," said Wright. "To have Robbie on one side and me on the other, that's a tremendous opportunity. I'm thankful that Major League Baseball asked and wanted me."

Wright and Cano will choose three teammates each. Last year, Cano was roundly booed for bypassing Royals star Billy Butler when the event was in Kansas City.

"Now that you're in New York, you get to pick whoever you want," said Cano. "Now I don't have to pick David Wright because he's on the other side. Now you do it at home, where you have your crowd and the greatest fans in the world get a chance to see you swinging in the Home Run Derby."

Cano won the derby in 2011 and Wright was runner-up in 2006.

"I have to do some scouting, start maybe having some of the number-crunchers crunch some numbers for me, see who swings the ball well here in New York," said Wright. "I'm not sure yet."
