Too Close To Call: Jets Might Not Name Starting Quarterback Until August
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — This might not be decided as quickly as you think.
Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith are locked in a tight quarterback competition, with neither one pulling away so far.
Rex Ryan and the New York Jets might not know who their starting quarterback is until sometime during training camp in August — and the coach is willing to be patient. Quarterbacks coach David Lee says Wednesday that "we'll know when we know" that the Jets have their starter.
Lee says Sanchez has worked hard on holding onto the ball to limit turnovers, while Smith is a work-in-progress who has focused on his footwork, among other things.
Ryan also indicated that the Jets could be open to having Smith run some read-option plays — despite it not working with Tim Tebow last season — if Sanchez wins the job.
