NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Mets ace Matt Harvey has “absolutely” thought about making this year’s National League All-Star team.

Just wearing the uniform would be an honor, especially in front of the hometown fans at Citi Field. Getting the starting nod would be even better.

“That would be a huge adrenaline rush,” Harvey told WFAN radio’s Mike Francesa on Wednesday. “And it would be the start of hopefully something great, to have my first All-Star Game at home and hopefully get a chance to start it.”

Harvey has made his case — and then some. The 24-year-old is 6-1 with a 2.16 ERA and an NL-leading 115 strikeouts.

Of course, manager Bruce Bochy will have the final say in naming the NL starter.

“Whether they decide to or not, just being a part of it would be a huge thrill for me,” Harvey said.

As for simply making the team, Harvey told Francesa: “The only thing I can do is go out and perform and push the issue.”

Harvey has built on an impressive rookie campaign, looking absolutely unhittable at times this season. He flirted with a no-hitter in Atlanta on Tuesday, an electric first act to the Super Tuesday twinbill, which saw hyped prospect Zack Wheeler make his major league debut in the nightcap.

The right-hander is years away from earning the “veteran” label. But that doesn’t mean he can’t lead the Mets’ rotation.

“That’s something that I’ve always wanted. I’ve always wanted to lead a staff,” he said. “Fortunately enough, the success is there to maybe step into that role.”

Mets manager Terry Collins praised Harvey’s makeup Friday on WFAN.

“This guy is way beyond his years in terms of the way he approaches the game and his thought process,” Collins told Francesa.
