East Rockaway Students Enjoy Star-Studded Prom Night Just Months After Sandy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Devastation from Hurricane Sandy almost resulted in a star-crossed prom night for some local high school students -- that is until some real life stars decided to lend a hand.

It ended up being a dream night for students at East Rockaway High School, many of whom didn't think they would even have their dance after their school was ravaged by the storm last October.

It all started when student Molly Bastow wrote an essay nominating East Rockaway High for a dream prom in an online contest organized by dress and accessory company "Rent The Runway." Singer Jordin Sparks provided the entertainment Thursday while students danced the night away.

"This is more than we ever could have asked for. This is awesome," Bastow told CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez.

Contest organizers said that the decision to help the East Rockaway students was a no-brainer.

"We felt like it was a great opportunity for us to give back after Hurricane Sandy and find a school who was really deserving of a special experience to celebrate after all the hardship they've been through," Rent The Runway spokesperson Jennifer Fleiss said.

Students were treated to head-to-toe makeovers. Girls were given red carpet-ready dresses and boys received slick new tuxedos.

"It's set up gorgeously. I never expected the prom to be like this. I feel like I'm in a dream," Carly Howard said.

The Midsummer Night's Dream-themed prom included minstrels and stilt walkers, and created memories that a storm could never wash away, Sanchez reported.
