Some New Yorkers Try To Beat The Heat, Others Step Outside To Soak Up The Sun

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The worst of the heat may be over, but for some New Yorkers it may have already been too much. When the Big Apple turns into the 'baked Apple', some like it hot and others do not.

"Yes, me in paradise right here," Brian Williamson told CBS 2's Steve Langford as he took in the furnace-like conditions at a park in Chelsea on Sunday morning.

Down the street on the High Line there was no escape from the blowtorch elements.

"I was born and raised in a tropical country, but this is unbearable," Sri Lanka native Rangana Fernando said.

But, it may be a matter of perspective.

"I'll take it anytime over snow," said one visitor from Canada.

Some New Yorkers took to the water to escape from the heat and took advantage of free kayaking on the Hudson at 57th Street.

"It's nice, it's enjoyable so far," said Queens resident Terrell Davis.

There are some all out sun worshipers who can't get enough of the heat, and others who don't have much of a choice.

"You know I gotta make a living, gotta do what I gotta do, so I gotta work hard and keep it going," said Street-cleaner Frederick Sullivan who was in the middle of a seven-and-a-half hour shift.

New Yorkers looking to stay cool through Monday can do so at one of more than 400 cooling centers set up by the city.
