Fatal Police-Involved Shooting Under Investigation In Belleville

BELLEVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting in Belleville that left a father of four dead early Tuesday morning.

Dante Cespedes, 40, was shot and killed by police around 2 a.m. at his Lake Street home, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

A preliminary investigation found Cespedes' wife went to police seeking a restraining order, claiming that she was being physically abused by her husband, prosecutors said.

Four officers went to the couple's home to arrest Cespedes for allegedly assaulting his wife and to serve him a temporary restraining order, prosecutors said.

Cespedes, who appeared to be intoxicated when officers arrived at the scene, lunged at the officers with two knives, prosecutors said.

Three of the four officers fired their weapons, killing Cespedes, prosecutors said.

Relatives insist the man did not own a weapon, was not armed and believe he posed no threat, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported.

No one else was home at the time of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
