NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – On Tuesday, the New York Mets have placed injured right-hander Shaun Marcum on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

The Mets made the announcement Tuesday after receiving confirmation that Marcum was unlikely to pitch again this season.

SIMS: BREAKING DOWN MARCUM’S INJURY

Marcum had shoulder surgery after he was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition that involves the compression of nerves near the neck. Marcum had been feeling tingling and numbness in his right hand and was placed on the disabled list July 9.

The 31-year-old Marcum is 1-10 with a 5.29 ERA in 14 games (12 starts). He signed a $4 million, one-year contract with New York last winter that included a chance to make another $4 million in bonuses.

He missed much of the first month of the season with right biceps tendinitis.

By releasing Marcum this week, the Mets could save $375,000 to $1,375,000 in roster bonuses, depending on how the specific contract language is written about a traumatic arm injury.
