Federal Hearing To Be Held For 2 Recent Conn. Metro-North Incidents
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The National Transportation Safety Board says it will hold an investigative hearing on two recent Metro-North railroad accidents in Connecticut.
The NTSB announced Wednesday it will hold the hearing on Oct. 22 and 23 in Washington.
On May 17, an eastbound train derailed and was struck by a westbound train just outside of Bridgeport, injuring 73 passengers, two engineers and a conductor. On May 28, a track foreman was struck and killed by a train in West Haven.
During the hearing, parties to the investigation will testify about track inspection and maintenance, passenger car safety standards, crashworthiness, policy and practice of roadway worker protection and organizational safety culture.
Federal crash investigators have been concentrating on a rail joint that may have caused the eastbound train to derail in the May 17 incident.
The accident left 2,000-ft of track damaged, along with wires and signals that had to be replaced.
NTSB says both investigations are ongoing and the hearing will develop additional facts to support the investigations.
