Body Of Woman Found In Staten Island Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two women walking a dog on Staten Island led police to a grisly discovery Thursday night.

The women were walking in Willowbrook Park when they smelled a strong foul odor and called 911. Police searched for an hour before finding the body in a wooded area.

The body has not yet been identified, but family members fear it may be the remains of a missing 20-year-old pregnant woman who disappeared earlier this month.

The body was found near Victory Boulevard and Morani Street, near where Megan Marotte was last seen on Aug. 4.

Loved ones have been gathering outside Marotte's home, which is located about a half-mile away from the park, but asked for privacy.

The troubled woman was arrested last month after crashing her car into a local 9/11 memorial and has struggled with drug addiction, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported. Her family only recently learned that Marotte was pregnant.

Now family members fear the worst as they await a positive identification of the body.

The medical examiner's office will determine cause of death.

The park remains closed as the investigation continues.
