NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez knows at least one person within the Yankees organization has his back.
Rodriguez stepped up to the plate for his first at-bat in the second inning and was hit by a pitch, prompting the Yankees and Red Sox to clear the benches and bullpens at Fenway Park.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi ran onto the field, threw his cap to the ground and was ejected Sunday night. He was tossed during a heated argument after plate umpire Brian O’Nora warned both teams against further trouble.
Boston pitcher Ryan Dempster hit Rodriguez in the second inning with a 3-0 pitch. Dempster threw his first pitch of the inning behind the legs of Rodriguez, missed inside with the next two pitches and then threw a fastball that glanced off A-Rod’s elbow pad and deflected into his back.
Prior to the game, A-Rod’s boss, Yankees general manager, Brian Cashman spoke to the media about the A-Rod situation.
Cashman said when he does speak to A-Rod, it is very brief and doesn’t have much to say to him.
“I’m not comfortable talking to Alex on this stuff, because I feel we’re in a litigious environment, so I am not comfortable anymore talking to him.”
“Hello, goodbye, and that’s it. Because anything else, I don’t want to be distorted, to be quite honest,” Cashman said.
Cashman said he is very frustrated by the whole situation, because A-Rod is not just going after management, “he’s putting it at the level of our trainers, our medical staff. The organization. The team.”
Asked by a reporter if the drama surrounding A-Rod would prompt the Yankees to release Rodriguez, with four years and $86 million remaining on his contract after this season
“That’s not something for me … I don’t think that’s something that would be considered, personally,” Cashman said.
