Poll Finds That New York Has Both The Best And Worst Sports Fans In America

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York has the best sports fans in the world, right?

Well that depends on who you ask.

In a survey done by Business Insider, Americans were asked about the characteristics of different states. For example, participants said that Massachusetts residents have the weirdest accents, Louisiana residents are the drunkest and California residents are the hottest.

When it came to sports, well, the results were more complex.

Business Insider's survey revealed that New York has the best sports fans. The Empire State got 193 of 1,442 votes, good enough for 13 percent.

But then, in a surprising twist, participants of the survey also voted that New York has the worst sports fans. The state received 158 of 1,442 votes (11 percent). The website showed its sense of humor, writing, "Most likely due to the fact that most Americans have never been to Philadelphia, the rest of the country believes New York also has the worst sports fans. I blame John Rocker."

The Tri-State Area has nine major professional sports franchises: the Yankees and Mets in MLB, the Jets and Giants in the NFL, the Nets and Knicks in the NBA and the Devils, Islanders and Rangers in the NHL.

The New York Liberty of the WNBA and the Red Bulls of the MLS also play in the region, and Syracuse brands itself as "New York's College Team."

New York was also represented well -- and not so well -- in other categories. The state was voted to have the best food, but was also voted the most arrogant and rudest in the nation.
