NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 20-year-old Bronx woman was stabbed to death after her car was rammed by a livery cab in an apparent domestic dispute, the NYPD said.
The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday on the Pelham Parkway at the entrance ramp to the New England Thruway.
Diones Espinal, 31, chased down his ex-girlfriend, Katherine German, who was a passenger in a Honda Pilot that was being driven by a 28-year-old man described as a platonic friend, according to authorities.
The cab slammed into the side of the SUV, causing it to run off the road, hit a concrete barrier and overturn, police said.
Espinal then got out of his vehicle, grabbed a knife, went over to the SUV and repeatedly stabbed German in the neck and torso as she remained trapped in the wreckage, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 31-year-old cabbie remained on the scene and is now in police custody. Charges are pending against him, including murder.
A knife was recovered at the scene, police said.
Espinal is a longtime livery driver for Kiss Car Services in the Fordham section of the Bronx. He was working at the time of the incident.
Hours after the incident, a woman who described herself as his step-sister learned about the horror from CBS 2’s Lou Young. All Debra Rosado could do was gasp, initially.
The estranged couple last lived together in his step-mother’s apartment on Woodycrest Avenue, Rosado said.
“They’d been together for years. They broke up and they got back together. They just had a baby together,” Rosado said.
The company dispatcher said Espinal and the victim had a history of problems. German had a working order of protection against the suspect, set to expire in October, CBS 2’s Weijia Jiang reported.
“He encountered a problem with his girlfriend, but we never found out what it was. We don’t go so deep asking questions,” Maria Martinez, of Kiss Car Service, said.
Police sources told CBS 2 the two got into a fight Tuesday night and German had a male friend pick her up, but somehow Espinal tracked them down, Jiang reported.
“He had plans to move with her in August; Just leave,” Rosado said, adding when asked if the two planned to get married, “No, they were going to leave, move over there with his brother in Florida. I really don’t know.”
Espinal’s colleagues were shocked by the accusations.
“The information for me is very surprising. It’s unbelievable,” fellow driver Junior Molta told WCBS 880’s Paul Murnane.
Police said the driver of the Honda sustained cuts and bruises in the crash, but refused medical attention at the scene.
