NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie makes no apologies for being a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Still, it struck some as odd to see Christie seated in the box of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, presumably rooting against the New York Giants — who play their home games in the Garden State — on national television Sunday night in Dallas.

Former Giants center Shaun O’Hara took his displeasure to Twitter: “I think it’s total BS that @GovChristie is sitting next to Jerry Jones in his suite during a NYG game. Sellout. #JerseyStrong.”

Christie was scheduled for a fundraising tour Monday in Texas for the Republican National Committee. He admitted in 2010 that being a Cowboys fan “is not the smartest thing for the governor of New Jersey.”

Christie addressed his Dallas fandom during a guest co-hosting gig on WFAN radio last month, and was asked about it again this weekend.

“Oh, they hate it,” Christie told the NFL Network in an interview that aired Sunday. “Giants fans, obviously, are more hateful of my rooting interests, but, you know, I told them right from the beginning when I was running in 2009. You get asked those kind of questions and I didn’t try to hide it. I’m a Cowboys fan, I’m proud of it, and you got to be true to the team you’ve been rooting for your whole life.”

Maybe this will help him out: Christie said on WFAN in August that the two Tri-State teams should really be called the New Jersey Giants and New Jersey Jets.

“It bothers me that these teams are still called New York teams,” he told co-host Craig Carton. “They train in New Jersey, both of their facilities are in New Jersey on New Jersey property. They play in New Jersey every Sunday. There’s nothing about New York with either one of these football teams … When a baseball team moves, should they still be called the old city’s name?”
