Knicks' Anthony On Future: 'I'm Not Going Nowhere'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - One of the concerns for the New York Knicks and their fans this upcoming season was whether this would be the final year with Carmelo Anthony in a blue and orange jersey.
Those concerns can settle for a while after Anthony told Bloomberg News, "I'm not going nowhere," when asked if he would become a free agent after the upcoming season.
If Anthony were to opt out of his contract with the Knicks, he would be giving up $23.3 million in 2014-15. But on the other hand, he would be in line for a lucrative long-term deal.
One advantage for the Knicks if Anthony would test the free agent market: they would be able to offer him the largest contract under the collective bargaining agreement. The Knicks would be able to offer Anthony the maximum contract in the range of five-years and approximately $129 million.
Anthony and Jason Kidd were posing for photographers at a Sept. 11 charity event Wednesday when Kidd, his former teammate and now the Brooklyn Nets' coach, asked Anthony if all the attention was for his announcement that he was going to Los Angeles.
Anthony told the crowd that he would not address his contract or free agency during the season.
"I'm just not going to do it,'' he said. "I'm going to let everybody know the first day that I'm not going to talk about it.''
Anthony was pleased with the moves to replace Kidd, Rasheed Wallace and other players the Knicks lost from their Atlantic Division championship team this past season.
"Despite what everybody is saying, I feel that we made some huge strides this summer, acquiring the guys that we went out there and got," Anthony said.
