Bronx Fire Leaves 1 Dead, 1 In Critical Condition
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fire in the Bronx on Saturday morning has left a wheelchair-bound man dead and his mother fighting for her life, officials said.
The blaze in Bronxwood started around 6 a.m. at a six-story brick residential building on Colden Avenue near Williamsbridge Road, fire officials said. More than 100 residents were evacuated.
The fire started inside the victims' apartment, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported. Neighbors tried to break the door down but couldn't get to the man in time. He and his mother were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where the 54-year-old woman is in critical condition.

"Every morning, the mother would be out there with the special truck that comes up and picks him up -- the bus that takes him to rehabilitation, I guess, during the day," a neighbor told Hall. "Come back at night, she'd wait outside for him. It was terrible.
"You saw the apartment. There was smoke billowing out, and it was a black, gray smoke just coming out the side of the door. Felt the door. A lot of heat. A neighbor from the sixth floor came down and tried to break the door down."

Officials have not released the names of the victims.
It took 40 minutes for firefighters to extinguish the blaze, officials said. The investigation is ongoing, but it does not appear the fire was suspicious, authorities said.
