Former L.I. Man Extradited From India To Face Rape Charges

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been returned to the United States from India, and is being held on charges that he raped a 14-year-old girl more than three years ago on Long Island.

Amit Singh, 32, was returned to the Nassau County Special Victims Squad this past Saturday, on charges of rape, sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and violating probation.

In July 2011, Singh was caught by authorities at the New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport while trying to leave for Bangkok, and was held in custody pending extradition, Nassau County police said.

He stands charged with approaching the 14-year-old girl on March 11, 2009, as she walked past his home, forcing her into his house, and raping, her, police said.

Singh allegedly fled the country to India after finding out the girl had reported the rape, police said.
