Baby Found In Trash Bag Released From Hospital In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A baby boy who was abandoned two months ago in Jersey City was out of the hospital Sunday evening.

The baby, who is now being called Kenneth, was found on Aug. 31 <a title="Crying Baby Pulled From Trash Bag In Jersey City" href="http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/08/31/crying-baby-pulled-from-trash-bag-in-jersey-city/"by three boys playing near an apartment building on Kensington Avenue in Jersey City. They were drawn to a moving trash bag, thinking the baby was a kitten.

The children knocked on the building superintendent's door, and he and his wife ran outside and tore the bag open, 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported that day.

"I saw that there was a baby in there and I ripped the bag more where his face was and the baby had garbage all over it," said Rebecca Walmers.

Four days later, the boy's mother was arrested. Police believe Rosibel Lanza gave birth to Kenneth about 11 or 12 weeks early in her home, prosecutors said.

She then allegedly put the newborn in a plastic shopping bag with paper towels and toilet paper, investigators said.

Kenneth is now in the custody of the New Jersey Department of Children and Families.
