EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A car being driven by a 15-year-old boy collided with another vehicle in Edison early Tuesday morning, killing the teen and two people in the other car, authorities said.
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Route 27 near Stony Road, Middlesex County authorities said. All three victims were Edison residents.
The teen, who was driving a 1995 Honda Civic, collided head-on with a Nissan Altima that was being driven by 46-year-old Mohammed Zia, authorities said.
A passenger in the Altima, 35-year-old Ali Behzad, and the teen, whose name was not released, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Zia was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later.
Moazzam Zia, who was visiting the crash site Tuesday, told Champion the victims were his uncles.
“They went to go get coffee, and after that they just never came back,” he told CBS 2’s Don Champion. “I’m holding myself up right now. I go to my house and see his clothes just laying there and see everything that he was going to wear today.
“God took the biggest part of our family away today … two of them at once.”
Investigators spent hours at the scene of the crash taking photos and trying to piece together what went wrong. They say the teenage driver is to blame for the accident.
It was unclear Tuesday evening who owned the car the boy was driving, but police said it was not stolen, Champion reported.
The minimum age for driving in New Jersey is 16.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Edison Police Department at 732-248-7529 or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3373.
The crash was the second deadly accident in Edison in Edison within 24 hours. Nora Ashe, a 66-year-old Catholic nun, was traveling in a car that collided with a box truck on Woodbridge Avenue on Monday afternoon. She taught at St. Joseph’s High School in Brooklyn.
Two of her relatives were hurt in the crash. No charges have been filed.
