Baby's Body Found At Long Island Sanitation Facility

LAWRENCE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A baby was found dead, reportedly in a garbage bag, in a Nassau County sanitation facility Tuesday, police said.

Police confirmed to 1010 WINS that the baby's body was found Tuesday. The body, which still had an umbilical cord attached, was found in a garbage bag moving along a conveyor belt at the sanitation facility at 2 Bay Blvd. in Lawrence, according to a Newsday report.

The body was found in a recycling area at the Sanitation District 1 plant around 2 p.m. Tuesday, workers told the newspaper. The body was that of a boy and was wrapped in a bloody towel inside the black plastic bag, the newspaper reported.

The case was being investigated as an infanticide, police told the newspaper.

The Nassau County Medical Examiner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, according to a news release.

There was no information Tuesday night about who was believed to have put the baby's body in the bag or where. The Sanitation District 1 and 2 plant in Lawrence serves Five Towns, Green Acres, Inwood and Valley Stream on Long Island, the paper reported.
