John Sterling To Call Play-By-Play At Inaugural 'Kitten Bowl' On Super Bowl Sunday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- You've heard of the "Puppy Bowl," Animal Planet's yearly extravaganza on Super Bowl Sunday that features loveable pooches doing loveable pooches things.

Well, try this one on for size: the first annual "Kitten Bowl" will challenge for pet television show ratings superiority on Feb. 2 on Hallmark Channel USA.

And if that's not enough to completely grab your attention, there's this: Yankees radio play-by-play announcer John Sterling -- yes, THAT John Sterling -- will be calling the action.

According to a post on Hallmark's Facebook page, Sterling will join emcee and long-time animal rights activist Beth Stern, radio shock jock Howard Stern's wife, "for the paw-to-paw active LIVE from Kitten Stadium on Hallmark Channel USA."

Now, of course that begs the question: what is the Kitten Bowl exactly?

As Newsday reported Tuesday, Kitten Bowl, which Hallmark is calling "the greatest feline showdown in cable television history," will include an obstacle course with hurdles, tunnels, hoops, jumps, weave poles, lasers, lures and toys on strings.

Kitten Bowl will be conducted in association with North Shore Animal League America, with all of the participating kittens guaranteed homes when the big event is over, Newsday reported.

The event is part of the channel's "Pet Project" initiative, which is "devoted to celebrating pets and the incredible joy and enrichment they bring to our lives," the event's news release said.
