Shrinking Enrollment Forces District To Close 2 Dix Hills Elementary Schools

DIX HILLS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Two elementary schools are closing in Dix Hills on Long Island.

Forest Park and Chestnut Hill Elementary Schools will shutter their doors at the end of the school year.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, two parents whose adult children attended Forest Park said they're sad to learn the schools will be closing.

"We are sick about it for all the families that are in this community who moved here because of such a wonderful elementary school," a mother told Hall. "It was really ideal, it was really everything you would hope for as a parent."

The Half Hollow Hills School District said declining enrollment forced them to shutter the schools.

"From kindergarten through fifth grade, kids had amazing experiences with teachers," the mother told Hall.

"You remember when your kids brought home pictures and stuff from the school," said another mother.

The cost-cutting move will save $3 million next year. There is no word on possible staff layoffs.
