Conn. Truck Driver Allegedly Tried To Cheat GWB Tolls
FORT LEE, N.J. (AP) — Two truck drivers have been arrested in separate incidents within a week for allegedly trying to evade tolls at the George Washington Bridge, according to The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said 43-year-old Yuriy Ganzman of Avon, Conn., was arrested Friday allegedly trying to pass through a toll with an improper plate that had been reported missing by another company. Police arrested a 46-year-old Florida man last Sunday at the bridge toll lanes for lacking a front license plate and having a back plate that was bent to allegedly avoid detection.
Port Authority Police Officer Jason Malice made both arrests, according to Pentangelo.
In the most recent arrest, Malice pulled Ganzman over around 4: 15 p.m. Friday at the bridge after noticing his 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer did not have a proper emissions sticker and had a trailer plate improperly displayed, police said. Further investigation revealed the plate had been reported lost or stolen in August by a New Jersey company called The Marine Company, according to Pentangelo. Company officials told police they believe the plate had been removed from the trailer during Hurricane Sandy. The company reported the plate stolen in August after they started receiving EZPass violations for the missing plate, Pentangelo said.
Ganzman faces charges including toll theft and possession of lost property. The Port Authority had not received an attorney notification for Ganzman as of Saturday, Pentangelo said.
The Freightliner tractor-trailer is registered to Ganzman Trucking of Farmington, Conn. A message left Saturday at the company was not returned.
Police say the truck’s actual license plate was found hidden inside the vehicle, and Ganzman allegedly made statements indicating he knew the plate on the truck was not his, according to Pentangelo.
The truck has been impounded.
