NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The New York Cosmos are back with a bang. In their return to the North American Soccer League, the Cosmos defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks to claim the NASL Soccer Bowl.

37-year-old Brazilian-born midfielder Marcos Senna scored the lone goal to lift the Cosmos to title glory. Senna represented title-winning Spain at UEFA Euro 2008. The experienced midfielder scored a volley in the 50th minute past Silverbacks goalkeeper Joe Nasco.

The Cosmos previously won the Soccer Bowl five times in their heyday during the 1970’s and 1980’s. They returned to the NASL in August 2013, forgoing the NASL spring season. New York won the NASL fall season with a 9-4-1 record.
