Wilton Woman Loses Arm After Being Attacked By Own Pit Bull

WILTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - A Wilton, Conn. woman is recovering after being viciously attacked by her own pit bull.

As WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported, the victim lost an arm and part of the other in the attack. She tried to crawl to safety beneath a car in her driveway, police said.

Responding police officers had to shoot and kill the dog just to get on the property, according to police.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what led up to and set off the violent attack.

"We have not been able to interview the victim yet. She's still in intensive care. In the coming days, we hope to be able to interview her and perhaps learn what was going on that morning," Wilton Police Lt. Donald Wakeman said.

Wakeman added the victim's sons have not been able to shed any light on what went wrong with the family dog.

"I know we've had a couple issues where the dog has left the property. People have called us about the dog, they were concerned about the dog," said Wakeman.

Police said had a driver who stopped to try to corral the dog kept going, the victim likely would have bled to death on the spot.

Police have not said what charges, if any, might be filed in this case.
