LYNDHURST, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Police in Lyndhurst are looking for suspects after a jewelry store owner was abducted and his wife tied up during a home invasion.
As WCBS 880’s Jim Smith reported, family members did not make any comments as the victim returned from the hospital with a beaten face.
Police released a sketch of a suspect, describing him as a Hispanic man with dark skin, in his mid-20s, about 5’9″ tall and 150 pounds. Two other suspects were wearing masks, police said.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, police said several suspects burst into a home on Lake Avenue as three people, a husband, his wife and their adult son, were inside.
The three suspects with guns and masks tied up the woman and abducted her 60-year-old husband, who owns a jewelry store, police said.
“Our two victims are owners of a jewelry store. We believe that they most likely were targeted because of that,” Lyndhurst Police Capt. John Valente told Smith.
The suspects forced the man into his own car and he was later found on the side of the road in Garfield, about 15 minutes away from his home. He was able to flag down a passerby and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
“Several thousand dollars worth of high-end watches were taken,” said Valente. “Whatever reason, whatever plan that they had, their plan was abandoned.”
His wife was able to get free and called a family member who called 911. It’s still unclear if the man escaped or if he was released by his abductors.
The couple’s adult son was not hurt.
“My detectives are here, the Bergen County sheriff’s crime scene unit is here, they’re collecting physical evidence inside the house and doing what we usually do at a crime scene,” Lyndhurst Police Chief James O’Connor told CBS 2’s Kathryn Brown.
O’Connor said one of the suspects fled from the home when officers arrived.
The investigation is ongoing.
