Long Island Man Accused Of Killing Girlfriend, Shooting At Cops

RIDGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island man has been arrested after police say he shot and killed his girlfriend then barricaded himself inside an apartment, at one point trading fire with responding officers.

Suffolk County Police said they were called to a domestic dispute at at the Ridge Garden Apartments just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday. When police arrived, they found Kimberly Sellitto, 36, lying on the front lawn, authorities said. They moved her body before determining she was dead from an apparent gunshot wound, according to police.

The woman's boyfriend, Jose Rodriguez III, 32, then barricaded himself inside the apartment with his two children, police said.

The man eventually let the children go, police said. That's when they say the suspect fired at responding Emergency Service Unit officers, who returned fire. Nobody was injured in the exchange.

Police said Rodriguez finally surrendered around 1:45 p.m. He is charged with second-degree murder and attempted aggravated murder. Rodriguez is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Central Islip.

The children were released to their mother's custody.
