Connecticut Couple To Mark Their 81st Wedding Anniversary
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- A Connecticut couple recognized as the longest-married living couple in the nation are getting ready to celebrate their 81st wedding anniversary.
Ann and John Betar grew up as neighbors in Bridgeport and eloped back in 1932.
They drove fast from Bridgeport to Westchester County to avoid an arranged marriage planned for Ann to a man 20 years older.
On Monday, they'll celebrate their 81 years of marriage.
John said the secret to their success is being content with each other and their life.
"Be content with what you're doing, what you have," said John, who is 102.
"Marriage isn't a lovey-dovey thing, you know, for 80 years -- you learn to accept one another's ways of life," said Ann who is 98.
Life hasn't always been easy; the couple lost two of their children in the last 15 years.
They have three other kids, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
