Report: Yankees May Be Lead Horse In Beltran Race
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- At least five teams are said to be in the mix for Carlos Beltran.
But the New York Yankees are "emerging" as the top bet to land the free-agent outfielder, according to the New York Post.
The Post reported that "industry buzz" says New York will sign Beltran, who hit .296 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs in 2013 for the St. Louis Cardinals. Another free-agent outfielder who has been in contact with the Yankees told the paper that he believes Beltran will land in the Bronx.
The sticking point appears to be the length of his contract. Beltran, who turns 37 in April, is seeking a three-year deal. The Yankees are reportedly more comfortable offering two years.
The Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox have also been linked to Beltran, according to CBSSports.com and WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman.
The New York Daily News reported late Sunday that Beltran became the Yankees' top priority after signing catcher Brian McCann to a five-year, $85 million deal.
Beltran, a career .283 batter, debuted in 1998 with Kansas City and spent nearly seven seasons with the New York Mets. He's also played in Houston, San Francisco and most recently St. Louis.
