Woman, 78, Killed In Crash On Long Island

MOUNT SINAI, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 78-year-old woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a crash on Long Island.

Marylou Pinto was driving a 2007 Kia east on North Country Road in Mount Sinai when her vehicle apparently crossed over to the opposite lane near Shore Road around 4 p.m. Sunday, according to Suffolk County police.

The Kia slammed into a westbound 1997 Lexus being driven by Patrica Vallary, 68.

Pinto, of Mount Sinai, was taken to Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, where she was pronounced dead, police said. Vallary was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded after the crash, and the investigation was ongoing late Sunday, police said.

It was not immediately learned whether the slippery weather caused by a wintry mix of precipitation played a role in the accident.

Anyone with information about the accident was asked to call the Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad at (631) 854-8652, or to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at (800) 220-TIPS.
