NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The Knicks will wear white uniforms against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night. Confusion ensued last time the two teams met at Madison Square Garden on November 16.
The Knicks wore their orange alternate uniforms, while the visiting Hawks opted to wear red. Though the Knicks lost 110-90, both teams committed errant passes and miscommunications on the court.
Knicks lead announcer Mike Breen noted that the two teams had difficulty telling one another apart during the MSG broadcast.
The league has stepped in to ensure such an embarrassment doesn’t happen again.
“Neither team was at fault,” NBA’s vice president for basketball communications Tim Frank told the New York Times. “The Knicks orange has been designated as a light alternate home uniform. Going forward, we’ll ensure that the opponent wears a more distinguishing color uniform when the Knicks wear orange.”
According to the NBA’s official rule book, the home team is mandated to wear light-colored jerseys, and the visitors dark jerseys, unless otherwise approved.
Knicks fans are hoping their team’s luck will change for the better. The Knicks are 0-6 while wearing the orange alternates and are last-place in the Atlantic Division at 6-16. They’re hovering just above the 5-18 Milwaukee Bucks, who hold the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
According to league guidelines, the Knicks aren’t obligated to wear their alternate uniforms again this season as they’ve already worn the bad-luck uniforms for a league-minimum six times.
