Ice Shuts Down Stretch Of Long Island Expressway During Evening Rush

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Icy conditions prompted police to shut down a stretch of the Long Island Expressway in Suffolk County Tuesday evening.

The expressway had fully reopened by 8 p.m.

During the evening rush in the 6 p.m. hour, police shut down the expressway (Interstate 495) between Exit 68 near Yaphank and Shirley, and Exit 71 near Calverton.

Crews were sanding and salting the roads due to ice.

Earlier information that the expressway was closed as far west as Exit 49 in Nassau County turned out to be incorrect.

Officials had advised commuters to stay off the expressway altogether due to the ice.
