NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Thursday night marked the first night of Kwanzaa and dancers from the Something Positive Company helped kick off the holiday with a performance at the African Burial Ground National Monument.

Kwanzaa takes place from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1.

Each day, a different principle focusing on family, community responsibility, and self improvement is celebrated.
