Man Fatally Struck By Van On Highway Off-Ramp In New Jersey

BRIELLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man was fatally struck by a van while walking his dog on a highway off-ramp in central New Jersey early Wednesday morning.

Brielle police told the Asbury Park Press that Belmar resident Joseph Hillman Jr., 70, was struck on the off-ramp from Route 35 to Route 71. Hillman was pronounced dead at the scene.

It remains unclear why Hillman was walking on the roadway.

The van's driver, a 38-year-old man from Neptune City, was not injured in the accident.

Hillman's dog was also unharmed.

Police said they are trying to determine if the wintry weather played a role in the fatal accident.
