NYC Fashion Week: Celebrities Strut Their Stuff For A Good Cause

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York's world-famous Fashion Week began Thursday night, but most of the women on the catwalk at the Lincoln Center Theater were not professional models.

Instead, they were celebrities using their star power for an important cause, CBS 2's Dave Carlin reported.

Star after star -- all dressed in red -- were rocking everything from ultra glam to fresh and edgy at the Go Red For Women & The Heart Truth 2014 Red Dress Fashion Show. For example, Ireland Baldwin, the rising star daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, wore a dress by Donna Karan.

"I've never worn anything so form-fitting in my life," she said. "It makes me feel like you've been working out like crazy when you haven't."

Backstage, the air was thick with a fog of hairspray and the smell of nail polish.

Singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat said she loved the experience.

"I think I'm more excited than nervous," Caillat said.

On the runway, a pair of Joans were strutting their stuff -- rocker Joan Jett and "Dallas" and "Knots Landing" actress Joan Van Ark.

"It is a Joan festival," said Van Ark, who added that she was thrilled to meet the Jett, best known for singing "I Love Rock 'n' Roll."

The red and rollicking good time had a serious side -- to encourage women to pay attention to their health, especially their hearts. In placed an extra emphasis on getting younger women to get regular checkups. That's why stars in their 20s and younger joined in the fun.

"Weight, diet, exercise," Van Ark said. "It's very important."
