Make-Up Dates For Snow Days Could Put Vacation Plans In Jeopardy In Eastchester

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Friday marked was the second straight snow day for some area school districts – and makeup days are becoming a problem.

As CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported, one might the brutal winter storms that have left so many communities awash in white would be a great deal for kids.

New York City schools, of course, have been open all week despite criticism over the decision to keep them in session. But in communities such as Eastchester, schools were closed both Thursday and Friday due to "inclement weather and poor road conditions."

The nor'easter on Thursday dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of Westchester County.

And we all know kids are thrilled to pieces when they get a snow day. Or are they?

Isabella Contant, 12, was at home sweeping snow off the family van Friday. She said her first response to the announcement of a snow day is, "Yay, like, hallelujah."

But it's not actually that simple. Another look at the Eastchester schools website says the makeup days will be Thursday and Friday of next week – smack during what is supposed to be winter break.

"I was like, 'Aw man! No!'" Isabella said.

For Isabella and hundreds of other Eastchester students like her, such tradeoffs are like robbing Peter to pay Paul. For Isabella's dad, Matthew Contant, it is a whole lot worse than that.

"We made plans six months ago to go to Disney," he said.

That's right. Contant has already pre-paid for his family to take a trip to Disney World in Florida next week.

"Since we had so many snow days, they started going into the vacation," Matthew Contant said.

Truth be told, the makeup days were planned a long time ago. But the Contants never figured they would be getting so much snow that it would be affecting their break.

So what to do?

"We're going to Disney World," Matthew Contant said.

He said he paid and the family is going, and the chips will fall where they may – even if Isabella will be absent for the makeup days.

"We're just going. I said, we're not going to change our plans, you know, for two days," he said.

Contant said his daughter can make up the work when she gets back.

Some other school districts around the region also have been considering Saturday makeup days. Among them is Fort Lee, which also had another snow day on Friday.
