NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Residents are still digging out from another winter storm that brought snow and ice to the Tri-State Area Thursday and Friday.
As temperatures rose Friday, snow and ice turned into a slushy, dirty mess.
New Yorkers tried to navigate the melting snow accumulating on street corners that have been dubbed “slush ponds” and “black holes.”
Some people tried to get over with an Olympic-style leap, while others tried to find a dry route in the slush.
“I just kind of go around it and try to find the best way,” one woman told 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa.
“I think the smaller step the better because if you lunge you’re not sure where you’re going to land,” another woman said.
“I’m just trying not to get hurt, that’s the goal,” another said.
“It’s absolutely insane,” Jay Clark told CBS 2’s John Slattery.
One man said he practically had to stroke his way across the street in his Dycker Heights neighborhood.
“I think it’s fun, this is winter,” a man in midtown Manhattan said. “It’s fun, you’ve gotta enjoy it or else you’ll go crazy.”
“It is what it is and spring is around the corner,” a woman said.
Lurking just off the curb on many intersections was grade-A slush. The kind to avoid.
“I was abut to cross the sidewalk, but then I saw a huge puddle,” Dena Cohen told Slattery.
Sam Halpert had to lift his Citi Bike up over a huge mountain of snow in Midtown, just to return it to the docking station, CBS 2’s Tracee Carrasco reported.
“Two days ago it was bad because you had to dig out and you couldn’t get them,” Halpert said.
Trying to get a Citi Bike out of a rack was even more impossible, Carrasco reported. The tires were unable to move, caked in snow and ice.
The conditions were just crazy for people without the proper footwear.
“I’m just glad I have on my boots here, but it’s definitely a hazard,” Clark said.
More snow is in the forecast for Saturday. During recent storms, the Department of Sanitation has hired snow laborers to clear bus stops, fire hydrants and cross walks.
