Officer Fires On Suspected Car Thieves In Farmingdale Parking Lot

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police on Long Island say an officer fired into a stolen SUV after the driver tried to hit him with it.

The incident happened at 9:12 p.m. Friday in a restaurant parking lot in Farmingdale.

Nassau County police say officers had just located a Toyota Highlander that had been reported stolen from another parking lot.

Police say an officer got out of his car to investigate when the driver of the SUV started driving at the officer, hitting the police car door.

The officer fired one round into the SUV.

Police say there were three or four people in the stolen SUV, and they fled in the vehicle.

Local residents told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that the shooting came as a surprise.

"Never heard of any kind of problem in this area so it is shocking," one woman said, "It's a family area, children. You would think, you know there's an Applebee's right over there."

The officer was not injured but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
