2 Killed In Overnight Crash On LIE In Fresh Meadows

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating a deadly car accident on the Long Island Expressway in Queens.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday between exits 25 and 24 in Fresh Meadows.

Police said a 2010 Audi convertible was headed westbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car then flipped on its side and slammed into a tree in the median between the expressway and the service road, police said.

"I was walking my dog here, and I saw the car going really fast and he hit a dip," one witness said. "Once he hit the dip he tried to brake and the car kind of spinned, like to the left, and then he hit the tree."

"The car was just completely wrapped around the tree," another witness said. "It was a sad, sad scene to see."

"I'm in shock right now, this is unreal," another witness said.

The male driver and a female passenger were both killed on impact, CBS 2's Kathryn Brown reported.

Police have not said whether speed or weather conditions played a role in the crash.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
