Cops: Man Stole Pricey Watch From Bin At Newark Airport Security Checkpoint

NEWARK, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- A Staten Island woman had just passed through a security checkpoint at Newark Airport before a trip to Ireland when she realized that her $1,800 watch was missing.

Port Authority police took a look at surveillance footage and identified a passenger who was at the checkpoint at the same time as the woman and acting suspiciously, 1010 WINS reported.

The passenger was identified as Luis Casiano, 65, of Paterson.

Detectives confronted Casiano when he returned from a trip to Puerto Rico and arrested him with the watch in his possession, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Casiano allegedly grabbed the watch when the young woman, who chose to remain unidentified, took it off and placed in a bin for screening.

Passengers at Newark Airport told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern that it's important to keep a close eye on valuables when passing through security.

"I keep my eye on my stuff all the way through," Nathaniel from Jersey City said, "As long as you keep your eye on your stuff you should be great."

The young woman's mother said that she was very pleased with the work done by detectives to retrieve the watch.
