NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — In anticipation of warm weather and the possibility of illegal motorcycle, dirt bike, and ATV use the NYPD conducted an initiative to prevent such activity in Manhattan, over the weekend.
Groups of dirt bike and ATV riders were spotted operating recklessly on city streets throughout the day on Saturday, the NYPD said.
The crackdown resulted in three arrests and eight seizures.
At 5:20 p.m., in East Harlem officers attempted to stop a motorcyclist on 2nd Ave. The man dropped his bike and fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief pursuit. Two officers sustained minor injuries during a struggle with the suspect and were treated at St. Luke’s Hospital.
The suspect Donovan Hibbert, 28, was charged with reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
Another man, Samuel Lopez, 41, was arrested in upper Manhattan and charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
Lopez was seen driving a camouflage-colored ATV in and out of traffic on Madison Avenue near East 135th Street, police said. He was allegedly driving on the sidewalk and was arrested while fueling up his vehicle at a nearby gas station. Another ATV rider was also at the gas station at the time, he fled on foot but abandoned his ATV. Both ATVs were vouchered by the NYPD. Another ATV was vouchered after being abandoned by its operator at 112th Street and 5th Ave.
In West Harlem, authorities observed a male suspect riding a dirt bike along Broadway between 137th and 138th Street. Andy Hernandez, 21, dropped his bike and fled on foot, jumped over a fence, climbed a fire escape, and ran along rooftops until he was apprehended on the roof of 503 W. 138th Street, police said.
Hernandez has been charged with reckless endangerment, removal of a vehicle ID number, resisting arrest, multiple counts of criminal trespass, and reckless driving.
