NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A $1,000 reward is being offered for information in the brutal attack of a livery driver in Brooklyn.

The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. Sunday on West 11th St in front of the Marlboro Projects in East New York, according to the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers.

Driver Salomon Alcantara was dropping off the suspect after completing a round-trip fare when he was slashed and beaten, the NYSFTD said.

Alcantara was taken to Lutheran Medical Center.

"These attacks must stop, we need stiffer penalties," spokesman Fernando Mateo said. "Salomon was almost killed, he spent 12 hours in the hospital being stitched up and could have died."
